On March 26 at 3 p.m., colors filled the air as Desi Club kicked off their annual Holi celebration. Holi, a Hindu festival known as the “festival of colors,” celebrates the arrival of spring and symbolizes the victory of good over evil. This year, the festival occurred in India on March 3.
“This event brings a lot of people together with the color on everyone, and they join together as a community,” sophomore Abby Philip said.
The event began right after school as members of Desi Club and other participants gathered by the track. Students shared snacks such as samosas, or fried dough filled with a potato vegetable filling, cookies, and mango juice. After the snacks, they started the Holi festivities, which included games, music and vibrant colors.
“It’s been a couple of weeks (of planning). We were planning on having (the celebration) during Holi but because of some scheduling issues we were having it late. We’re still really excited though,” said sophomore and board member Sana Bhattacharyya.
Participants of the festival lined up to receive bags of color powder to toss around the grass and throw at each other. The club invited students to attend for a $7 ticket fee. Sophomore and president Arush Gupta organized the event alongside the rest of the board.
“It’s a really good opportunity to express our culture here,” Gupta said. “There’s a big Indian population and it’s really fun to celebrate traditional events and a big part of our culture with everybody.”
