Students crowded the main lobby during all six periods of the African American Student Union Culture Day event on Friday, Feb. 28. A long line cycled students through a buffet of “soul food” – plates piled high with mac and cheese and fried chicken. Tables were set up displaying African artifacts, paintings by African artists and books about race. Titles included Maya Angelou’s collected works and American Street by Ibi Zoboi. Posters offered hair braiding for a dollar a braid, and students stopped to watch scenes from the Academy award-winning short film, Hair Love. Shandia Lewis-Booker, senior and AASU member, says that the event’s main goal is promoting unity. “Our aim is to support the AASU while also contributing to the unity and the black community at ‘Stoga,” Lewis-Booker said.
