On Tuesday, Peer Mediation held its annual Cornucopia event, a day of activities meant to unify the school before fall break. As usual, Cornucopia presented students with club bake sales, sports and indoor activities. With a different goal in mind this year, Peer Mediation brought forth a new element in light of “giving thanks” to the community: Friendsgiving.
Friendsgiving was held during first period, where students and teachers were permitted to have breakfast in class, either brought from home or bought at the cafeteria or the bake sales. Individuals contributed food such as fruit, waffles and donuts to share with the class.
In addition to hosting Friendsgiving, Peer Mediation is also running a book drive as a community service project to show gratitude for education. By the end of the drive on Dec. 6, Peer Mediation will donate the collected books to the Philly Book Bank.
The rest of the day went by with plentiful activities for students to choose from, from making popping boba to writing letters for human rights to playing floor hockey. Films such as “The Lorax” and “Zootopia” played in the atrium, where students could also take pictures at a photo booth.
Additionally, students only had to check in with their fourth and seventh period teachers throughout the day, unlike in previous years when students had to check in with teachers every period.
“I liked the freedom. We didn’t have to do anything at all (as) we only had to check in for a few classes,” freshman Valentina Betancourt said. “It’s a good way to start the break.”
