The excitement at Harold Zimmerman Stadium at West Chester East High School was palpable, with hundreds of fans from both Conestoga and Avon Grove attending. The game was played at 4:00 P.M on Saturday, June 10. Tom Sopko scored twice in the losing effort.
With each Avon Grove goal in the first half, ‘Stoga matched it with their own. After Sopko’s first goal in the third, two unanswered goals by Avon Grove in the 3rd quarter made it 4-2, making the hope to win seemingly small. However, ‘Stoga responded by scoring twice in the fourth, including Sopko’s second goal, and a miraculous goal with just 1.3 seconds remaining, to knot the game at 4.In the 1st overtime, play was highlighted by key defense on both sides, leading to a second overtime. Avon Grove scored with 1:59 left, winning the state championship. At the end of the day, ‘Stoga fell to Avon Grove 5-4 in double overtime. Though ‘Stoga fans were disappointed with the loss, the play was phenomenal and great to watch.
