On Thursday after school, the Black Student Union assembled for its annual fall gathering.
The event kicked off at 6 p.m. with opening remarks made by Ron Toole and Ryan Howard, co-coordinators of the meeting. Shortly after, junior Faith Bowden sang the Black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. Students then gathered to hear original slam poetry, performed by sophomores Phoebe Satchell and Josie Louineus.
“I really think that the passion and the inspiration in this poem comes from what it feels like to be a Black woman in today’s society, especially in terms of history and how we have progressed, what it’s like to be portrayed as an angry Black woman nowadays in predominantly white environments and how that can be frustrating,” Satchell said.
Leaders of the union served food, including macaroni and cheese, ribs and various sweet treats. To conclude the meeting, members of the union participated in a series of competitive team-building exercises.
