On Tuesday night, the boys’ soccer team faced off against Marple Newtown, securing a 3-1 win on their senior night and last regular season home game of the year.
The night started off with the team’s senior night celebration, which honored seniors Derek Boyer, Jake Barnes, Ryan Max, Andrew Zhang, Remy Tshibangu, Ryan Monroe, Chaz Wildey and Evan Cross. The match began after the conclusion of the ceremony.
In the beginning of the first half, ’Stoga let in a goal off a clean finish in the box, allowing Marple Newtown an early 1-0 lead. The boys quickly fought back, with junior Daniel Poltaraus scoring off a corner kick by Evan Cross. Junior Justin Maxwell scored a second and third goal, with the third aided by Ryan Monroe, who set up Maxwell for a great shot with a long throw-in. ’Stoga ended the first half strong, leading 3-1.
In the second half, the boys exhibited great defense and passing all around, but without any goals. ’Stoga played it safe while looking for opportunities to widen the difference between the two teams’ scores. Nevertheless, neither team managed to finish their opportunities, ending the game with a 3-1 Pioneer win.
With the victory, the boys finish the regular season with a 14-4-1 record and will head to the playoffs seeded second in the district.
