The boys’ tennis team captured its third consecutive PIAA 3A Team Boys Tennis Championship 3-2 against Lower Merion on May 18 at the Hershey Racquet Club. The Pioneers competed against the Aces in the state championship finals for the fourth year in a row.
The team defeated Hempfield High School 3-0 and State College Area High School 4-0 in the opening rounds. In the semifinals, the Pioneers defeated Unionville in the semifinals 3-2 as sophomore and first singles player Ethan Sun rallied to recover from being down four games in the third set to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In the final round, senior Rohan Rao won 6-2, 6-2 at third singles. At second doubles, senior Ethan Davidson and freshman Sean Fan won 7-5, 6-4, with Fan serving an ace on matchpoint. In the last match, senior Raphie Lubiniecki and freshman Tristan Lubiniecki secured the team’s title by winning 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3.
The boys finished with an undefeated record 22-0 with their victories for the Central League and District 1.
