On Thursday, Nov. 14, Key Club hosted its third annual student-faculty volleyball game in support of the Four Diamonds Mini-THON organization. The game raised approximately $550 toward the club’s year-long goal of raising $25,000 to support pediatric cancer research. Five teams of students competed against the faculty team. Ultimately, the faculty team won with a score of 3-2.
“It was (a) really great cause we’re playing for, and I love supporting the students,” said guidance counselor Justin Beasley-Turner, who played in the game. “Any time we get a faculty event, I’m one of the first people to join just because it’s a great time.”
With a goldout spirit day, Mini-THON held a raffle during the school day for participating students. The performance of the faculty team at the game surprised freshman Zoe Oikawa, a student participant and player on the freshman volleyball team.
“They (the faculty) were a lot taller than a lot of the students, so they could push (the ball) over (the net) and do things that students can’t really do,” Oikawa said.
Sophomore Lukas Krijt De Lora, who played in the game, describes problems in his team’s dynamics that led to a slow start. After playing a few sets, however, he felt his team began to collaborate more effectively, leading to more points being scored, though it ultimately fell short.
“Towards the beginning, our communication wasn’t very good, so the teachers had the upper hand on us, but we didn’t really know what to expect,” Krijt De Lora said. “By the end, we caught the flow of things, and we picked up the pace.”
Mini-THON hopes to continue hosting events to help reach its goal throughout the year. Junior Victor Pan, a Key Club board member who helped organize the event, looks forward to planning future events to help reach Key Club’s goal.
“It (the game) helped fundraise a lot of money and it’s just another step to help us get to our goal of $25,000 for Mini-THON,” Pan said. “It’s a really fun event with students and teachers interacting as well.”
