On Thursday, students and faculty dressed up in costumes to celebrate Halloween. Many students dressed up as their favorite characters from various forms of media. The staff held a costume competition, with many departments decorating the hallways and dressing up to win the most votes from students. A couple of Conestoga moms, with approval from the administrators, set up a display of flowers and rangoli to honor Diwali, the Hindu celebration of lights, which happened to coincide with Halloween.
Each department in the school coordinated its costumes under a theme. The science department’s theme was the murder mystery board game Clue. In support of the theme, teachers in the department created a mystery about who stole the pioneer statue in the main lobby. The teachers gave hints about the suspect throughout the school day on Schoology.
The theme of the English teachers’ costumes was the book “Animal Farm” by George Orwell. The world language department had a medieval theme. The math department dressed up as toys from the movie “Toy Story.” All the other departments also participated in the competition, including social studies, wellness/fitness, nursing staff, library staff, secretaries, visual/performing arts and business/technology.
At the end of the school day, students voted on which department had the most creative and best-executed theme through a Schoology poll. The science department won the competition with 324 votes, with the world language department coming in second with 278 votes and the math department coming in third with 101 votes.
