First student faculty volleyball game sees great success

The crowd erupts in thunderous applause as junior Alex Barton spikes the volleyball down on history teacher Aaron Lockard and earns the student team another point. Planned by the Mini-THON fundraising committee, the student faculty volleyball game took place on Tuesday, May 23 and was seen as a community-oriented event to raise money for research combating childhood cancer. Tickets were sold for $5 per person and the event provided food and concessions.

“I feel like this would be a good way to not only spread awareness, but also for everybody to be involved. It would be a good and interactive way to raise money for childhood cancer because a lot of people thought that because Mini-THON’s over, the fundraising for it is also over, which is not true,” said fundraising committee member sophomore Eric Xu. “The fundraising shouldn’t end because childhood cancer never ends either.”

The match was played in a 4-game system with a tiebreaker. The student teams for each game were also broken up by grades. Game one featured freshmen, game two had sophomores and juniors, game three was exclusively juniors and game four included everyone. After four back and forth games, the students ultimately won the match, winning three out of the four games played.

“The final game was really fun, especially since everyone got an opportunity to play,” said junior Justin Chow.

Key Club advisor Allison Long believes that this event was a great success and hopes it can become a longstanding tradition at Conestoga.

“The students who played seemed to have a great time and the faculty also very much enjoyed the game. I loved playing in it myself but I mostly enjoyed watching our students play and assist each other out in the games. Some of the older players took on a leadership role and really helped some of the underclassmen with positions and strategy,” Long said. “We hope to do this again next year and make it bigger and better.”
