An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an Apple a year only keeps you out of your AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint stores for 12 months. The iPhone 6s, iPad Pro, second generation Apple watch software, new AppleTV software, newest iOS and the newest Mac OS X were revealed to the world on Sept. 9, 2015. This is the kind of news, though, that stays fresh for an entire year because everyone is constantly upgrading. Precisely the crisis I am facing right now: with the agony about how close that day is for me.
For years I have been telling people that never would I ever switch from Android to iPhone. I just never saw it as special or as worthwhile as an Android. One uniform screen, with the same experience, not much to make it truly yours and not to mention “literally everyone” on the Main Line (I’d say about 80 percent if I had to guess) having one. I’ve never been a huge fan of conformity.
Just in case you were wondering, the phone I soon will lay to rest is the Motorola Moto X 2013. I’m sure if you asked 100 people maybe one or two would know what kind of gem I got my hands on two years ago. To those who said “a what kind of phone?” I get it. Given the Moto X and its sister model, the Moto G, is much more popular in Latin America, where iPhones are looked at as a superfluous luxury. A great phone of its time, don’t get me wrong, but its battery and with my heavy use has seen better days. There will always be some features from Android, in general, that I will miss, but that’s alright for now.
Though I am sure I won’t change my mind between now and my upgrade, the hundreds and hundreds of people’s poisonous Apples that I see passing by in the hallway in four minute intervals will always have me wondering if we really need a new iPhone every year. AT&T, Verizon, other carriers and even Apple have plans that let you upgrade early or use “The iPhone Upgrade Plan” for your iPhone 7, 7s, 8, 8s, 9, 9s to come. Even with the iPhone 6s and all the cases you can buy on Amazon, you know someone was totally sold on a 5c just because it comes in pink.
We live in the era of Apple’s reign that has no true end to their position on the throne anytime soon. Heck, this article was written on a Mac. It’s sad to see our school district, with all the iPads and Macs we so fortunately have, barely able to keep up with the newest operating systems; especially when it’s not just a click of a button to put everything into its latest and greatest form. It quite literally takes an entire summer to make everything work like that. Just this summer, nearly every iMac was put on Mac OS X Yosemite from Mavericks, and now El Capitan is available for upgrade. The same with their corresponding iOS upgrades. I feel sorry that Apple does this to people, schools and business’ IT teams that maintain their products on their networks, not that those buyers don’t cater to the annual demands of the Apple Empire.
But for now, I will look for an outlet until I can fully join the Apple nation because my phone is down to 15% from 83% because I opened a Snapchat. Don’t be sad though, Android and Google Play, I will probably be back in two years anyway.
