Pink painted handprints dotted the “Smack Away Cancer” sign held by the Take a Blink for Pink club at the homecoming football game. For the club, pink is more than a color, it is a way of spreading Breast Cancer Awareness.
Take a Blink for Pink has been a part of ‘Stoga for five years. Sponsored by Unite for HER, a non-profit organization dedicated to battling breast cancer, the club raises money to help pay for breast cancer treatment in local hospitals, like Bryn Mawr Hospital. This past October, they commemorated the passing of Breast Cancer Awareness Month by hosting the annual Pink Week.
“The goal was to get the whole entire school to wear pink to raise breast-cancer awareness and to raise funds for Unite for HER,” said club co-president, senior Emily Pancoast.
They sold pink T-shirts all throughout the week and culminated in a Pink Out on Friday, October 26, both in school and at the evening football game. The shirts sold out, and the club raised over $3,000.
“We sold [pink] Conestoga shirts, and we also had United for HER shirts that were made with Conestoga on them,” Pancoast said.
Take a Blink for Pink has already planned another Pink-Out, this time for the upcoming basketball season. They are also working with Unite with HER to host a gymnastics meet near Philly in February as a fun way to raise more funds.
“This club has been a really big club in Conestoga and its something that everyone can relate to. We’ve all been affected by breast cancer, our friends, our family, so it’s a really good cause,” says co-president, senior Natalie Scilovati.
Under Pancoast and Scilovati, and sponsored by social studies teacher Katie Buckley, Take a Blink for Pink continues to impact the community, helping local women fight breast cancer and receive treatment.
