The Conestoga Crew club recently held a fundraising event entitled, “Family Fun Night,” for elementary school children in the Conestoga High School Cafeteria. This fundraising event featured raffle baskets, face painting, stationary rowing machine races as well as refreshments including soft pretzels and a bake sale.

The crew club encouraged elementary school students to take part in the event through the free t-shirts for the first 100 children to arrive. However, the major draw of the event were the games run by the rowers, such as corn hole, bowling, ring toss and flickin’ chicken, a rubber chicken tossing game. Junior Maggie Gosnear ran several of the games at the event.

“It was an easy way to raise money for the club because the raffle baskets were donated by the rowers and the families who attended paid for the raffle tickets. It was also fun for the rowers to get together and make a basket that the kids would like,” Gosnear said.

Although Gosnear saw “Family Fun Night” as an opportunity to fundraise for the crew club, she also really enjoyed helping to run the event with the rest of her teammates.

“The rowers had a lot of fun working the games and interacting with the kids, especially with games like the erg race and bowling. These games were not self-directed, so the rowers got to play with the kids there,” Gosnear said.

According to senior captain Abigail Lewis, a lot of hard work came from the rowers and their parents when it came to putting together the event. The parents organized a bake sale and picked out the games that would serve as entertainment for the night, while the rowers contributed through assembling the raffle baskets.

Although a lot of hard work went into “Family Fun Night,” Lewis believes that it paid off because the event provided the crew club with a chance to share their love of rowing with the local community.

“I think ‘Family Fun Night’ was important because it was a great opportunity to spread the word about our team and what we do. Rowing isn’t a super well-known sport, so we love getting the chance to introduce it to new people,” Lewis said.
