Conestoga’s Mini-THON was held from 6 p.m. on Friday March 24 to 12 a.m. on Saturday March 25 this year and nearly 200 students participated in the event
To start off Mini-THON, club heads Dohaa Ansari, Gwen Charles and Janashree Jonnalagadda shared the story of the event and introduced speakers Laura Rauth and Heather Burton. These two women gave speeches about their children who were both diagnosed with cancer. Rauth is the founder of the organization A Cure for Cam and her son, Cam, was a Conestoga student and a cross country athlete before he lost his battle with cancer. Burton is a mother of two kids in the T/E District and her youngest, Riley, was diagnosed with cancer when she was very little but is now several years cancer free.
After the inspiring speeches by these two ladies, the D’Emilio brothers, Jack and Justin, pumped up the participants with the Mini-THON theme dance to the famous “Friends” theme song. After the opening remarks, the students participated in a variety of instructed activities such as yoga, karate and zumba as well as self directed activities such as badminton, basketball, pillow sewing and skee ball. The students were on their feet for six hours, participating in the activities and enjoying food from sponsors such as Rita’s and Chik-fil-A. Mini-THON had student groups perform at the event including the Drum Line, ‘Stoga Breakers, K-Pop group, Piodanco and the ‘Stoga accapella group “Pitches”.
At around eleven on Friday evening, the lights were turned off in the small gym and students were given large glow sticks to light up the dance floor. Music played throughout the rest of Mini-THON in the small gym as activities continued in the large gym. Around 11:45 the music stopped and the lights went on as the club heads announced the winners for most money raised and the overall total. Junior Anna Hayden raised the most money with a total of over 7,000. The overall total for the night was $24,727, a larger total than last year.
