The Conestoga girls’ basketball team defeated the Upper Darby Royals 65-34 on Friday, Jan. 8 to strengthen their lead in the Central League standings.

The Pioneers were stellar on defense right from the get-go with several takeaways, severely limiting the number of shots the Royals could take. The offense struggled early with several missed field goals, but found its rhythm to take a 26-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The team continued to enforce its will on the court through the second quarter, building an enormous 41-8 lead at the end of the half.

The Royals started to find some answers on offense in the third quarter, but the Pioneers swatted down several shots and were excellent on rebounds, limiting the Royals to a mere 10 points. The Pioneers answered every point, maintaining a 33 point lead of 51-18 going into the fourth. The Royals continued to improve on offense, but at that point it was too little too late. The Pioneers simply stormed their way to a 65-34 victory, dominating on both sides of the ball the entire night.

The win brings the Pioneers’ record to 9-2 on the year, with a one win advantage of 8-1 in the Central League.

Senior Ellie Mack made sure to give credit for the performance to “the depth on our bench. Every single person came out and played.”

The Pioneers face a challenging week ahead, but Mack is ready to work for the win.

“It starts in practice; practicing hard and bringing the intensity,” Mack said.

The girls next face Marple Newtown on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
